Barack Obama Talks Directly To Ohio's Labor Leaders

For those on the call, it was an amazing day. A Candidate that isn't hesitant to say he will sign the "Employee Free Choice Act" (EFCA) and that he needs us and that he cannot gain the Whitehouse without us in Ohio and therefore the Nation. Our destiny is in our own hands.

Leaders from AFL-CIO Affiliates from all over the state were on the call. Read this Amazing story below.

“I can’t win without the 2.1 million members of the Ohio labor movement.  When a local union leader hands out a flyer at the worksite, when you send out a piece of local union mail, when you’re calling people...that’s what makes the difference.”  That’s what Sen. Obama, the AFL-CIO’s endorsed presidential candidate, said this afternoon on a conference call with Ohio labor leaders.  The call was hosted by Joe Rugola, President of the Ohio AFL-CIO, Richard Trumka, Secretary Treasurer of the AFL-CIO, and Dave Caldwell, Chairman of the Ohio AFL-CIO Political Committee.  Sen. Obama joined the call to personally give leaders his commitment to fight for working families’ issues.  He pledged to stand with us on issues ranging from health care to retirement security to education reform to trade, and he promised to sign the Employee Free Choice Act as President.

Leaders on the call emphasized that this is our year – this is our opportunity to change our country’s direction and get it back on track.  This year, our presidential candidate is a great ally to labor.  Sen. Obama has a 98% record of voting with the AFL-CIO, and the core of his platform is strong support for the needs of America’s working families.  Furthermore, he’s one of us – a hard worker from a middle class family, an activist, a family man, a proud American.  We’re fortunate to have such a promising choice this year, but we still face great obstacles – many folks still don’t know much about Sen. Obama, or they have heard frightening rumors, or they simply are having a hard time accepting him because of the color of his skin.  That’s why we have to focus on member-to-member communication, from worksite flyers to walks to phone-banks to just having a conversation over a cup of coffee or a beer.  We as a movement and as a nation can’t afford to let this opportunity slip away.

As Ohio AFL-CIO President Joe Rugola says, "For the next four months, we intend to focus every energy and every resource on sending Barack Obama to the Whitehouse as the next President of the United States."  You can watch the video of President Rugola here, and remember to check out the AFL-CIO's new website about Barack Obama, where you can learn more about where he stands on issues that are important to you and your family.  With only 111 days left to November 4, we have to make sure we are doing all we can to elect Barack Obama now.  We only have one chance this year to chart the course for positive change and a stronger, better America – let's make it count.

It’s our time!

In solidarity,

Ben Waxman, National AFL-CIO Labor '08 Ohio State Director
Jeanette Mauk, Ohio AFL-CIO Field Director
